The Truth About Gender Ratio: More Men or Women?

Frequently, we hear people say that there are more females than males, or vice versa. But if we think about it, which one is actually true?

Shortly, based on the U.N research in 2015, there are actually more men than women where there are 101 men for every 100 women in the world. This translates to approximately 50 million more men than women in the world. This statistic might be scary for single men, but it poses an interesting question – why are there more men than women in the world?

Contrary to popular belief, it is natural for male birth rates to be higher than female birth rates. However, male babies are more vulnerable to misbirth and are more susceptible to diseases compared to female babies. As they grow up, men also face various challenges that impact their life expectancy, such as physically demanding work, exposure to risks, and participation in wars. These factors contribute to a shorter lifespan for men compared to women.

Additionally, cultural factors play a role in shaping the gender ratio in certain societies. For example, in many Asian countries and the Middle East, men are considered more desirable because they are believed to better maintain the family’s bloodline and provide for the family. This cultural preference for male offspring is particularly strong in countries like China and India. In some cases, such as the United Arab Emirates, the male population is significantly higher than that of women due to the migration of male labor from around the world.

On the other hand, in Soviet Union nations, the female population is higher than the male population. This is primarily due to the conflicts in Soviet Union’s history, which led to a decrease in the male population.

According to Fisher’s Principle, the gender ratio of organisms will naturally remain balanced as organisms adapt to their conditions. Despite these variations in gender ratios around the world, the good news is that in our beloved country, Indonesia, the gender ratio remains balanced. So, for those who are still single, there is no need to worry about a shortage of potential partners, as the population of men and women in our country is still evenly distributed.
